Pour s’éclater un peu sur le circuit, il suffit d’appuyer sur le bouton M2, localisé sur la branche droite du volant, pour que le véhicule adopte ses calibrations les plus affûtées, et c’est parti… Sur ce circuit très technique, long de 5,8 kilomètres, qui comporte des dénivellations, des virages à rayon décroissant, une fabuleuse chicane et de longues lignes droites, le X4 M Competition est dans son élément, et sa dynamique impressionne pour un VUS. Le freinage est mordant, grâce aux freins en composite de céramique, le véhicule s’inscrit très bien en rotation dès l’entrée du virage, et il fait preuve d’un bel aplomb lors de la réaccélération, alors que le mode M Dynamic autorise une légère dérive à l’accélérateur jusqu’au point de sortie. Les mouvements de caisse sont bien maîtrisés, et le X4 M Competition ne rechigne pas à l’idée de soulever ses roues avant intérieures pour les passer au-dessus des vibreurs dans la chicane. La sonorité du moteur à pleine charge est très évocatrice, mais demeure un peu étouffée ce qui est le propre des moteurs turbocompressés. Avec ses 503 chevaux et sa limite de révolutions fixée à 7 200 tours/minute, c’est également le moteur à six cylindres en ligne le plus puissant de la marque. Jantes en alliage de 21 pouces, boucliers massifs et bas de caisse enveloppants répondent présents, alors que le noir brillant s’affiche sur la calandre, les rétroviseurs latéraux et le diffuseur arrière. Sous cette carrosserie à l’allure un tantinet décalée par rapport aux X3 et X4 conventionnels, se cachent des tirants de rigidification du châssis et une barre antirapprochement reliant les deux tourelles des suspensions avant localisées juste au-dessus du moteur. Dans l’habitacle, on remarque les variantes de selleries en cuir bicolore avec inserts en suédine, le volant sport M, avec boutons rouges M1 et M2 permettant d’accéder rapidement à un comportement routier plus typé, ainsi que les éléments de décoration évoquant un véritable cockpit. Sur la route, les X3 M et X4 M Competition savent se montrer dociles et relativement confortables, mais il tient de préciser ici que les routes américaines sur lesquelles nous avons roulé feraient l’envie de tous les férus de conduite sportive par la qualité de leur revêtement. C’est aussi à l’occasion de la conduite sur routes balisées que nous avons remarqué jusqu’à quel point la visibilité vers l’arrière est atroce dans le cas du X4 M, en raison de sa ligne de toit, ainsi que de l’étroitesse et de l’inclinaison de sa lunette.
